Considering the Seasons and Lafayette, Indiana’s Weather Trends

The time of year you choose for your senior photos can significantly impact the final result. Each season offers unique benefits, and understanding these can help you decide the best time for your shoot. Here are some seasonal highlights to consider:

Spring: Fresh Beginnings

Spring is a popular choice for many grads due to its vibrant colors and blooming flowers. The weather is pleasant, and the natural scenery provides a beautiful backdrop for photos.

  • Pros: Mild temperatures, lush greenery, and blooming flowers.
  • Cons: Unpredictable weather, allergies.

It is important to remember the blooming schedule of the trees and flowers though. It really depends on the winter that we have. If we have a mild winter, trees, leaves, flowers, and grasses may bloom earlier. Often, if we do the spring, I recommend waiting closer to Mid-April or almost into May.

Some trees do not get their leaves back until closer to the Mid-April/May time if we have a hard winter that goes pretty long. If you do not want trees without leaves in your images, it is better to wait.

Some opt to do areas that do not have as much greenery or lush trees in the background. Downtown Lafayette Indiana is always a great location for photos. Some spots on Purdue Universities campus also offers a beautiful aesthetic without leaf-less trees in the background!

If you are a Purdue May grad… do not wait until the week right before graduation! A lot of people do this and then campus is PACKED! I had one session and it took us nearly 3 hours to get all the landmarks because it was so packed. Each spot required a 20-30 minute wait to get up and get the shot!

Summer: Sun-Kissed Memories

Summer in Lafayette Indiana offers long days and plenty of sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor grad photos. The warm weather also allows for a variety of outfit choices, from casual to formal.

  • Pros: Consistent weather, vibrant sunlight, flexible schedules.
  • Cons: Hot temperatures, potential for harsh lighting.

Some considerations for the summer… if you are heat intolerant, it is best to do closer to spring time. I always tell people – I don’t care if it’s super hot out. I love it. But I do not have to look cute, so I can sweat and it’s all good 🙂 But if you do not want to look sweaty, then consider closer to spring.

If the day falls on a heat wave day, where the weather apps is sending notifications of high heat index, I typically recommend rescheduling your grad photos to a day that is not as hot. Just for a health safety thing.

Summer mornings are always a great option though! Did you know we have a morning golden hour too? I love morning sessions! Typically they are cooler, and still get some beautiful lighting!!!

This grad photo was actually taken at about 8 am in the summer! The sky was BEAUUUUUUTIFULLLL!!

Fall: Golden Hour Glory

Fall is known for its stunning foliage and cozy atmosphere. The soft, golden lighting during this season can create breathtaking portraits.

  • Pros: Beautiful fall colors, comfortable temperatures, soft lighting.
  • Cons: Shorter days, unpredictable weather.

Fall is ALWAYS popular! But make sure to schedule early because everyone wants their grad photos in the fall!!

If you are a Purdue University December grad, definitely consider fall! Contact the stores to see if you can get your cap and gown early for some photos!

I usually recommend end of September or October! End of October leaves start to really fall and trees become quite barren. So consider that when picking your date!

Winter: A Unique Touch

For those looking for a unique twist, winter can provide a magical and serene setting. Snowy landscapes and festive decorations add a special charm to your photos.

  • Pros: Unique scenery, festive atmosphere.
  • Cons: Cold temperatures, limited outdoor options.

If you do not like cold, consider not doing winter! But if you like cold weather, then great! Let’s do it!!

Something to consider though about Lafayette Indiana’s weather — if you want snow… we can’t really plan for when that will hit. So I always say if you want snow, have everything ready to go and we will have to make a game day decision when the snow hits!

Key Milestones to Consider

Timing your senior photos around important milestones can add sentimental value to your portraits. Here are some key moments to consider.

For Highschoolers:

  1. End of Junior Year: Scheduling your photos at the end of your junior year ensures you have plenty of time before graduation activities start.
  2. Start of Senior Year: Early fall, just as school starts, can be a great time for photos. You’re still fresh and energetic, and the fall scenery is beautiful.
  3. Before Major Senior Events: Plan your photos before key events like prom or graduation. This way, you can capture the excitement and anticipation leading up to these milestones.

For College Grads:

  1. Graduation Timing: If you are a December, May or Summer grad, consider this when scheduling your session! If you want warmth, but graduate in December, it’s totally OK to get them done earlier!
  2. Exam Schedule: I have had many people schedule grad photos during exam week. Then they are super stressed out. Schedule them before or after your exams so that you can focus fully on photos!
  3. Gown Rentals: The rental places may not allow you to rent the gown early to get photos. If you really want photos wearing the gown, we need to find out when they will rent them out. If you have your cap, stole, etc. but don’t care about the gown, we can do them whenever! FWIW – the gown is not flattering on anyone 🙂 So it is totally OK to do them without the gown if you are OK with that! But also OK to want the photos with the gown. It’s your shoot! So it is whatever you want!
